Proposing a Soccer Dome for Bradford...

Hockey is big in Bradford West Gwillimbury, there’s no denying it – but soccer is huge.
It’s not only that over 1,300 kids have signed up to learn “the beautiful game”, but many of their older siblings and parents play on adult leagues – and the passion for soccer galvanizes the community every time the World Cup comes around.
And with all the new homes being built across the western half of Bradford, Bradford Minor Soccer is expecting an explosion of interest.
The problem is one of access to places to play. In summer, soccer is played on pitches scattered throughout the municipality, from Bond Head to Magani Park; from the Bradford Community Centre to the Portuguese Cultural Centre, and wherever there is space, on school grounds, at the Bob Fallis Centre, and at the new Henderson Field on 10 Sideroad.
But in winter, it’s a different story. Soccer has to move indoors – and available gymnasium space is limited. Currently, Bradford Minor Soccer is by far the largest single gym-user in Bradford.
And that’s why a group of soccer fans are proposing a new indoor soccer facility for Bradford. Besides Minor Soccer, the Sr. Men’s League (with about 120 players), Women’s Soccer League (100 players), Masters League (35 players), and 14 local Youth Rep Developmental teams would also benefit from a dedicated indoor facility – as would volleyball, ultimate frisbee and flag football leagues, even lacrosse and field hockey.
The goal? To develop a Sports Dome, with a field measuring 125’ by 75’. There is a business plan already prepared, says proponent Hernan Burgos – with a benefit-cost analysis, of the cost of construction and operation vs. potential revenues, from team play and tournaments. What are needed now are partnerships, between the Community and the Town, and between fundraisers and sponsors, if the Dome is to become a reality… hopefully by the fall of 2008.
